Rouge Hill
History:
The history of the Rouge neighbourhood is typical of most neighbourhoods located at the north end of the city. This was primarily a rural farming community up until the 1950’s, when Highway 401 was built across the southern perimeter of the Rouge neighbourhood.
The opening of Highway 401 led to the building of the first homes in this neighbourhood along Sheppard Avenue, in the early 1960’s. However, the bulk of this neighbourhood was not developed until the 1970’s and 80’s. The urbanization of the Rouge neighbourhood has continued into the 1990’s, with the addition of new residential subdivisions, a shopping centre, schools, parks and a recreation centre.
Overview:
The Rouge neighbourhood is nestled between the Metro Toronto Zoo on the north, the Rouge River Valley on the east and Highway 401 to the south. The natural beauty of this area quickly comes into focus along Sheppard Avenue, which provides a spectacular view of the Rouge River Valley.
This neighbourhood features a good mix of affordable housing. It has it’s own shopping, schools, parks and community centre, is well served by public transit, and is close to commuter highways.
Lifestyle:
The Abbey Lane Shopping Centre, located off Rylander Boulevard, features a large supermarket, a Canadian Tire store, a pharmacy, banks, restaurants, a cleaners, a pet store, a hair salon, a post office, and an indoor children’s playground.
Homes:
The ranch-style bungalows and two-storey homes along Sheppard Avenue were built in the 1960’s. These houses are situated on extra wide and deep lots. Some of these lots stretch back four hundred feet. Many of the houses on the east side of Sheppard Avenue command a spectacular view of the Rouge River Valley.
The majority of the houses in this neighbourhood are two-storey detached and semi-detached homes built in the 1970’s, 80’s, and 90’s. There are also some townhouse communities and a handful of condominium apartment buildings located within this neighbourhood.
Recreation:
The Tall Pines Park and Neighbourhood Centre is located at 64 Rylander Boulevard, across from the Abbey Lane Shopping Centre. This is a modern facility with community meeting rooms. The park itself features two tennis courts and a children’s playground.
The Rouge Community Park, conveniently situated in the middle of this neighbourhood, is ideal for a short nature hike or picnic and also features a baseball diamond. Further west of the Rouge Community Park is Dean Park, another naturalized park that features tennis courts.
Rouge Park, which forms the eastern boundary of this neighbourhood, is popular with nature enthusiasts, hikers, joggers, and cross-country skiers. It is also the site of the Glen Rouge campground, which has over one hundred camp sites. Access to this park is located east of Sheppard Avenue off Kingston Road.
Transportation:
Bus service along Sheppard Avenue East connects passengers to the Sheppard Station on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line.
Motorists enjoy convenient access to Highway 401 from Sheppard Avenue and Highway 2 off Port Union Road. These two highways provide commuters with a variety of options, with connecting routes leading into and out of the city.
