      History:

      Maryvale was originally part of the former Village of Ellesmere, a thriving farming hamlet that was centred along today’s Ellesmere Road. The Village of Ellesmere prospered during the 1800’s, with its own school, post office and church. There were also blacksmith shops, a waggon making shop and two sawmills. In the early 1950’s, Ellesmere’s market gardens and dairy farms gave way to the present day Maryvale subdivision. Maryvale is named after the former Maryvale farm, noted for the breeding and raising of race horses. This farm was situated on the site of the present day Maryvale Public School. A horseshoe from the old Maryvale farm is mounted on a commemorative plaque in the foyer of the Maryvale Public School.

      Overview:

      Maryvale is bordered on the north by Highway 401, on the east by an industrial corridor, and on the south by the Canadian Pacific railway line. This small, family oriented neighbourhood revolves around the Maryvale Public School, located south of Ellesmere Road off Pharmacy Avenue. The Maryvale Junior YMCA is based at this school and Maryvale Park and Community Centre are adjacent to the school.

      Lifestyle:

      Maryvale residents do most of their shopping at the Parkway Mall, a medium-size, indoor mall located at the south-east corner of Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue. This mall is anchored by a large department store and a supermarket. It has over eighty stores and restaurants. Included in this mix are a large number of men’s and ladies’ fashion shops, home decorating and improvement stores, and professional and medical offices. Ellesmere Road offers a mix of small shopping plazas and larger retail stores, including a Home Depot, a video store, a beer store, and a golf centre. Medical and professional offices are also situated along this route.

      Homes:

      Maryvale’s housing stock consists primarily of cosy, brick bungalows and storey-and-a-half houses built in the 1950’s. These homes are well maintained and nicely landscaped. The lots are a good size and include a private driveway, usually with a garage.

      Recreation:

      Maryvale Park, situated off Pharmacy Avenue offers a myriad of recreational facilities including tennis courts, an outdoor pool, a wading pool, a baseball diamond, sports fields, and a children’s playground.

      Transportation:

      Bus services along Victoria Park, Pharmacy and Warden Avenues connect passengers to stations on the Bloor-Danforth subway line, while the Ellesmere Road bus links up with the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. Motorists can get downtown in approximately twenty minutes via the Don Valley Parkway, which can be accessed off Lawrence Avenue, just west of Victoria Park Avenue. Highway 401 on-ramps at Victoria Park and Warden Avenues are conveniently located at the north end of this neighbourhood.
