      History:

      Playter Estates is named after the Playter family who held the original land grants on both sides of the Don River near Bloor Street. Captain George Playter, the patriarch of the family, was an United Empire Loyalist who emigrated to Canada from Pennsylvania in the 1790’s.
      George’s son James Playter, owned the land where Playter Estates is today. However, it was James’ eldest brother John who actually settled on this land. John’s grandson, John Lea Playter, erected the Playter Homestead at 28 Playter Crescent in the mid 1870’s. This charming brick home is still owned by members of the Playter family. The property around the homestead was used for farmland up until 1912, when the current neighbourhood was developed.

      Overview:

      Playter Estates is an exclusive enclave of homes located just east of the Don Valley. This neighbourhood has many desirable features including beautiful homes, a first class shopping district on Danforth Avenue, and convenient access to Toronto’s transit system

      Lifestyle:

      An appealing aspect of living in Playter Estates is its easy access to the excellent shopping on Danforth Avenue. Here you will find everything from fashion boutiques and wine making shops to gourmet coffee shops and the best selection of Greek restaurants in the city. The Carrot Common on the Danforth at Jackman Avenue features many stores with a nature or health theme. Carrot Common’s anchor store is the Big Carrot – a natural food market that attracts shoppers from all over the city.

      Neighbourhood Spotlight: The Danforth

      Did you know that Toronto’s East-end landmark known as “The Danforth”, is the largest Greek neighbourhood in North America? The Grecian influence and culture, displayed in both subtle and more overt ways, exudes a warm and welcoming vibe! Close proximity to the downtown core, direct subway access, a mix of trendy and traditional shopping as well as a huge selection off fabulous restaurants are all great reasons to explore the Danforth. In the summertime, the sidewalks are overflowing with colourful planters, fresh local produce, and all year round you’ll find couples strolling, parents chasing toddlers, singles cycling and dogs stopping for friendly bowls of water as they all make their way down the long, vibrant Danfroth strip.

       

      Homes:

      Playter Estates is comprised of large detached and semi detached Edwardian and Victorian style homes built mostly between 1912 and 1930. The size and style of these homes is fairly uniform however, each house has its own decorative accents ranging from slate roofs and fish scale shingles, to stone gates and whimsical front porches.

      Recreation:

      Riverdale Park East, located south of the Danforth, is one of Toronto’s largest parks. This parks recreation facilities include seven tennis courts, an artificial ice rink, sports fields, a swimming pool, and a walking/running track. Riverdale Park also provides access to the Don Valley Ravine. This ravine includes a bicycle trail that runs south through the city along the west side of the Don River, where it connects to the Martin Goodman Trail along the waterfront. Pape/Danforth is the closest public library. It offers a variety of children’s programs.

      Transportation:

      The Bloor-Danforth Subway Stations at Broadview and at Chester, are each a short walk from the Playter Estates homes. Motorists travelling in and out of the city can gain immediate access to the Don Valley Parkway on-ramps, located just west of Broadview Avenue.
