River Oaks
History:
The first European settler in this area was Daniel Munn who settled here in the 1820s. The Munn family were very charitable donating a part of their land for a local schoolhouse, church and cemetery. It is no wonder the community came to be known as Munn’s Corners. The original Munn’s United Church is no longer standing but the present day church is still active. Munn’s cemetery at 2579 Sixth Line is a historic landmark that is operated by the Town of Oakville.
In the 1980s and 90s north Oakville underwent a dramatic transition from farms to subdivisions. That is when the present day River Oaks neighbourhood was developed.
Overview:
River Oaks has a new urbanism feel. Many of the houses have a front porch or balcony and the streets are made for pedestrians and cyclist with sidewalks and bicycle lanes. This is very much a family oriented neighbourhood with its own community centre, neighbourhood schools and shopping plazas and many parks with interconnecting trails and footpaths.
River Oaks abuts important Oakville landmarks: Sixteen Mile Creek forms the west border, Glen Abbey Golf Course is situated on the south border, Dundas Street West is the north border and Trafalgar Road is the east border. Dundas and Trafalgar are main arterial roads that provide River Oaks residents with quick and convenient access to the 400 series and QEW highways.
Homes:
River Oaks has a new urbanism feel to it. The houses are fairly close together and front garages are not as prominent as some other neighbourhoods, rather they are kept to the rear wherever possible. The houses are two and three storey in size. Many have aspects of Neo-Federal design, with architectural detailing including: front porch porticos, palladian windows and detailed brick pattern motifs.
Recreation:
River Oaks Community Centre is conveniently located in the middle of the neighbourhood at 2400 Sixth Line. This is a modern attractive looking facility with ample parking. This multi-purpose facility includes a gymnasium, indoor ice rink, two squash courts, two racquetball courts, a fitness studio, a spinning studio, a running track and community meeting rooms. This community centre offers numerous programs for adults and children including public skating, shiny hockey, organized hockey leagues, personal training, nutrition counselling and camps.
