Clearview was formerly part of the Village of Sheridan which was formed in the early 1800s. Sheridan prospered as a farming community, until around 1937 when the Queen Elizabeth Highway was constructed, cutting a swath of concrete through the former village. Sheridan would ultimately amalgamate with the Township of Oakville in 1962. However, the area would remain rural for a few more decades. Cecil Lawrence was a major landowner in the area post amalgamation. It was Lawrence who is credited with coining the name Clearview for the only street that ran through this area. The present day neighbourhood is situated on the old Lawrence homestead which was sold to developers in the 1980s when the present day neighbourhood was developed.
Editors’s Note: A grain silo and a cairn stone marker at the intersection of South Sheridan Way and Sherwood Heights Drive are memorials to the old Sheridan Village.
Clearview is a family oriented neighbourhood with a strong resident’s association. The streets are meant for families with traffic calming and bike lanes forming part of the streetscape. Clearview has nice size detached homes on winding traffic calmed streets. The topography is quite hilly in spots and there are a fair number of neighbourhood parkettes and trails. Schools and a shopping plaza are located in the interior of the neighbourhood far away from busier streets. The signature landmark street in this neighbourhood is Kingsford Drive. Sherwood Heights Drive forms the west boundary for this neighbourhood. Along this western boundary is a green corridor known as Kingsford Park. This park has a large community garden where fruits and vegetables are grown. There is also a leash free area for dogs and a children’s playground at the south end of the park. The elevated topography of this park provides clear vistas of the Town of Oakville and Lake Ontario to the south. Hence the name Clearview which is also a main north-south street that runs through this neighbourhood.
Upper Oakville shopping located at the corner of Upper Middle Road and Eighth Line, offers more than 50 diverse shops, restaurants and professional services. This mall takes pride in being part of the community hosting various events and serving as a neighbourhood hub.
Closer to home in the interior of the neighbourhood you can find basic household needs at the shopping plaza located on the southeast corner of Clearview and Kingsbury Drive.
Kingsford Gardens perched on a sunny elevation along Sherwood heights Drive is a community garden where you can grow your own fruits and vegetables. These gardening plots are available on a rental basis from the Town of Oakville and upkeep of plots is the responsibility of the person renting the plot.
The housing stock here ranges from entry-level link style homes approximately 1500-2000 square feet in size to mid size detached 3 and 4 bedroom homes approximately 3000-3500 square feet. Clearview homes have a fairly uniform look, think late 1980s subdivision, with all brick exteriors and garages out front. Backyards tend to be a decent size and well suited to families. Some of these homes are now dated inside and may require freshening up so there can be a wide discrepancy in price based on improvements and on size of the home. For the most part prices can range from $750,000 for a link style home to $1,500,000 for a large renovated detached home.
Clearview has a plethora of parks and open greenspace including: Clearview Park, Wynten Way Park and Kingsford Gardens which are all interconnected by the Avonhead Ridge Trail that circles this neighbourhood. This trail along with Clearview Woods are designated natural areas.
