History:
The Lasalle neighbourhood is named after René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, a French explorer who in 1869 became the first European to land on the shores of Burlington Bay. René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle sojourned for just 2 months in Burlington as he was determined to continue on with his journey to find passage to China. He would also explore the waterways of the United States. He never did find passage to China but he did leave an indelible mark as an explorer on the North American continent. As for the present day neighbourhood it evolved soon after the landmark Burlington Golf & Country Club was founded in 1923
Overview:
LaSalle is an affluent neighbourhood located west of Downtown Burlington. The LaSalle neighbourhood is situated along the shores of Lake Ontario and features outstanding views of Burlington Bay. Neighbourhood social hubs include the Burlington Golf & Country Club situated off posh North Shore Boulevard and the Burlington Sailing & Boating Club which operates out of LaSalle Park and Martina. LaSalle Park is one of the largest and prettiest parks in Burlington. The circa 1917 pavilion in Lasalle Park is a popular banquet venue . The signature street in the neighbourhood is North Shore Boulevard which twists and winds its way along the escarpment providing magnificent vistas of Burlington Bay and the Burlington Skyway Bridge.
Lifestyle:
LaSalle is just minutes away from Downtown Burlington’s vibrant shopping district along Lakeshore Road at Brant Street. This quaint shopping area is beautified with cast iron street lamps and hanging flower baskets. Within this shopping district you will find lots of fashion and home decor shops as well as cafes and restaurants. Fitness facilities, beauty and wellness clinics and medical and professional offices are also located within this shopping area.
Homes:
The signature street in this neighbourhood is North Shore Blvd which has some of the most magnificent waterfront estates in all of Burlington. This neighbourhoods gently undulating hills and winding roads are lined with beautiful homes on expansive properties. Many of these homes are situated in a ravine like setting. In addition to luxury homes there are also a large number of ranch-style bungalows and split-level homes.
Recreation:
LaSalle Park is one of the prettiest parks in all of Burlington. This picturesque park set on a bluff at Burlington’s lakefront includes a waterfront that is home to the Burlington Marina. On the rise of the hill off North Shore Boulevard this park has a scenic picnic area and a pavilion used for community events. There are also two baseball diamonds, a children’s playground and a wading pool with a splash pad. Burlington Golf and Country Club occupies a scenic spot along North Shore Boulevard East providing golfers with some of the best views of Burlington Bay. This is a private members only club. There is a curling rink at this club to keep members active during the winter months.
Arts:
The Art Gallery of Burlington is located at 1333 Lakeshore Road in the heart of Burlington’s downtown waterfront. This contemporary gallery is a multi-faceted centre that is the home base for 7 different artists guilds operating within the City of Burlington. The AGB also provides studio space for local artists, as well as hosting a myriad of exhibitions, lectures and events and running school programs. The AGB is especially known for its ceramic collection.
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is a city landmark and source of civic pride. This landmark centre occupies a high profile position in the downtown core at the corner of Locust and Elgin Streets. The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is comprised of two theatres; the larger Main Theatre has world-class acoustics and an orchestra pit. It is ideal for theatrical and musical performances and seats 718 people. The more intimate Community Theatre is ideal for smaller scale productions. It seats 225 people.
