Vellore came into existence in the mid 1800s as a rural farming hamlet. It was named after Vellore, a City in southern India. The Vellore name was chosen to commemorate British military victories in that region in the mid 18th century, during the Carnatic Wars between Britain and France. Vaughan’s first Township Hall was located in Vellore on Weston Road. This simple Regency style brick building continued to host Township meetings until 1943. The Vellore schoolhouse, circa 1868, located at 9541 Weston Road now serves as a museum that gives visitors a glimpse into what life was like in Vellore back in the 1800s. The present day neighbourhood was developed in the early 2000s.
Vellore is a newer neighbourhood located in the north central part of Vaughan. This neighbourhood features a beautiful contemporary community centre and library, excellent schools and lots of parks.
