Maple
History:
The first families to inhabit what is now Maple were the Noble and the Rupert families. These families put down roots in the area in the first half of the 19th century. Joseph Noble, was the first Postmaster in what was then called Noble’s Corner’s. The town’s name was later changed to Rupertsville, in honour of Dr. Rupert another early settler who was highly respected in this community. Conjecture has it that the name of this community was later changed to “Maple” in reference to the numerous Maple trees that once proliferated here. Maple’s growth as a town coincided with the arrival of the Ontario, Huron, and Simcoe Railway which built a line through Maple. A York County Township map of 1885 already refers to this community as Maple so it was literally on the map. Maple’s origins as an agriculture based community were bolstered by its proximity to the railway line and short distance to the City of Toronto. Some urban housing was built in the 1960s with wide scale development starting in the 1980s. Canada’s Wonderland opened in 1981, and was a major drawing card for the many families that would arrive in Maple at the same time.
