Rural Richmond Hill
History:
Rural Richmond Hill was first settled in the early 1800s mostly by pioneer families with German, Irish, English or Scottish ancestry. Many of these families travelled here from Pennsylvania and Upstate New York. Most of these first land grants encompassed two hundred acre lots. In return for the land the settlers had to clear a patch of forest and build a homestead on their property. They also had to contribute to the building of roads in the community which was no small task.
The first dwellings were simple log cabins. By the mid to late 1800s many of the settlers had amassed some wealth from severing off part of their land and from farming operations such that they could build more substantial brick homes. A good example of this is the Boynton House located at the Richmond Green. This Ontario farmhouse is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. This close knit community held an annual spring fair to celebrate the fruits of their labour. By the 1990s the rural way of life was over and instead of a fair we now have Canada Day celebrations every year at Richmond Green which brings the community together.
Overview:
Widespread development has largely bypassed Rural Richmond Hill as it is situated on the environmentally sensitive Oak Ridges Moraine. So instead of high density subdivisions and condos you have a handful of luxury gated communities surrounded by conservation areas, farmland and private golf courses. The exclusive Bayview Country Estates and Trailwood Estates are dotted with mansions on multi-acreage lots. There are also a handful of secluded estate homes off Stouffville Road that are situated on heavily treed lots that abut conservation lands.
Lifestyle:
Elgin Mills Crossing situated on the northeast corner of Leslie Street and Elgin Mills Road is a huge open air shopping destination anchored by The Home Depot, Staples and Costco. This shopping complex is comprised mostly of national franchise retailers and fast food restaurants. There are is also a professional and medical building that is part of this complex.
