Langstaff
History:
The Langstaff neighbourhood is named after John Langstaff, who emigrated here from New Jersey in 1808. Apparently he rode here on horseback. Langstaff had the distinction of being the first teacher at the local school. Langstaff found true love in his new home and married Lucy Miles, daughter of Abner Miles a local innkeeper. Sometime after the nuptials took place Langstaff presided over his father-in-law’s property on the northeast corner of Yonge Street and Highway 7. Langstaff was prominent in the community where he was the proprietor of woodworking shops, a pail factory, a general store, and a blacksmith shop. Not surprisingly this area became known as Langstaff Corners. When the Langstaff post office opened in 1870 grandson John Langstaff was the first postmaster. The Langstaff family were best known for practicing medicine. Four generations of this illustrious family served the community as doctors. Their medical practice was based in a magnificent Georgian Loyalist structure known as Holmwood which was situated on Yonge Street. A great grandson sold the family home in 2012 to the City of Richmond Hill who moved the Holmwood house from its former location on Yonge Street to its new home further north at 107 Hall Street.
