Doncrest
History:
Doncrest was likely named by Richmond Hill town planners in the 1980s making reference to the Don River.
Overview:
Doncrest is a family oriented neighbourhood filled with detached two-storey brick homes on winding tree-lined streets. The traffic calmed streets all have sidewalks and bike routes. Street signs everywhere warn drivers to provide safe passage for children walking to school. Neighbourhood Watch signs are also present. Valleymede Drive is the main street that runs uninterupted north and south through this neighbourhood between Highway 7 to the south and 16th Avenue to the north. The main community hub in Doncrest is David Hamilton park and the adjacent Ed Sackfield Arena which are both undergoing a major renovation and expansion.
Doncrest is situated in the southeast part of Richmond Hill sharing its south border along Highway 7 with the City of Markham. The Beaver Creek Business Park corridor forms the eastern boundary for the neighbourhood while Bayview Avenue forms the western boundary. High Tech Road which connects at Bayview Avenue is a shopping destination with many big-box stores including a Walmart Supercentre and a Loblaws.
Lifestyle:
There are plenty of shops and restaurants and professional and medical offices along Highway 7 especially the stretch around Leslie Street which features shopping malls many independent Asian shops and restaurants.
Homes:
Doncrest has a large number of entry level two-storey detached homes with a Neo-Georgian style. Most of these homes were built in the 1980s and 90s. They are distinguished in character by their pinkish red brick colour and matching interlock driveways with prominent garages in front of and attached to the home.
There are a fair number of low and mid-rise condominium options located on the peripheral streets of this neighbourhood.
Recreation:
Ed Sackfield Arena and Fitness Studio locted at 311 Valleymede Drive has recently undergone a renovation and expansion. The new wing will include an NHL-sized ice pad, a new fitness studio and aerobics room, new change rooms and a walking track.. Adjacent to this centre is David Hamilton Park. This park has recently been modernized with new play areas, a splash pad, multi-use courts, new walkways, seating, lighting and sports facility upgrades. Blackmore a community based tennis club is situated right next to the park.
Arts:
York Cinemas lis an independent multicultural movie house located at 115 York Boulevard. This intimate theatre featurres current Tamil, Hindi & Bollywood movies.
