Gorham
History:
Gorham-College Manor is principally named after Eli Gorham who settled in this area in the early 1800s and established the successful Gorham Woollen Mills on the banks of the Bogart Creek. Eli Gorham built the first brick house in Newmarket. It still stands today at 674 Gorham Street. His son Nelson Gorham, resided at 265 Gorham Street. Gorham Street is lined with houses built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Most of these houses are still standing. In 1909 Pickering College a highly esteemed private school, founded in 1842, relocated to Newmarket. The school operations were supported by an adjacent farm. The farm would eventually be sold to developers in order to pay for much needed repairs and expansion to the campus. The former farm grounds now comprise the College-Manor neighbourhood which was developed in the early 1990s.
Overview:
Gorham Street and College Manor Drive are the main streets that bisect this neighbourhood hence the name Gorham-College Manor. Gorham Streer is named in honour of a prominent Newmarket pioneer family while College Manor makes reference to Pickering College a highly respected private school that has held a prominent place in this community since 1909. This neighbourhood is bordered on the west by Newmarket’s historic downtown and on the east by the Newmarket Industrial Park. Gorham-College Manor is formerly a working class neighbourhood in transition as new families have begun to move in and fix up the older housing stock. Further signs of gentrification are the custom built infill homes that are slowly starting to spring up on the generous size lots that abound in this neighbourhood. Gorham College Manor is a perfect neighbourhood for commuters with the Davis Drive on-ramp for Highway 404 situated just minutes away. Neighbourhood landmarks include: Southlake Regional Health Centre, Pickering College, Newmarket High School,Scared Heart Catholic School, College Manor Park , Fairgrounds Park, Bogart Pond.and the ubiquitous East Holland River.
Lifestyle:
College Manor Shops is a small plaza containing essential household needs such as a grocery store, pharmacy and medical and dental offices. Leslie Street is lined with shopping plazas, chain restaurants and car dealerships.
Homes:
The streets are winding and the topography is a mix of hills and dales with many streets terminating in a cul de sac or backing onto a ravine. Gotham definitely has the most eclectic mix of houses in Newmarket and the greatest variety of sizes, shapes, and colours. Included in this mix are century homes that are mostly frame exteriors with Victorian accents. These older homes are mostly situated closer to Bayview Avenue. There is also a large selection of frame bungalows, ranch-style brick bungalows, split level homes and detached two storey Colonial Revial houses with a combination brick amd frame exterior. The lots are generally large and well treed. Most houses have at least one garage. There are also pockets of townhome enclaves. Some of these are higher end while others like Leslie Glen are geared more to the entry level first time homebuyer. Reflections on Bogart Pond is a boutique condo nestled into a ravine setting.
Recreation:
College Manor Park is a large neighbourhood greenspace with a soccer field and baseball diamond. Fairgrounds Park located at Timothy and Pine Streets has three baseball diamonds and a sports field. Adjacent to the park at 220 Muriel Street is the York Curling Club.
