Wismer
History:
The Wismer family were prominent settlers in Markham. The family patriarch, David Wismer, was of German descent. He originally migrated to Pennsylvania before settling in Markham Township in 1806. The Wismer family were tremendously philanthropic. They donated parts of their vast land holdings to community organizations for the betterment of the entire community. The area’s first school house was situated on land donated by the Wismer family. This one-room schoolhouse was located near the south west corner of what is now 16th Avenue and Highway 48.
Overview:
Wismer is a fairly new neighbourhood located in the north central part of Markham. The sound of children playing in the local schoolyards tells you this is a young and vibrant neighbourhood geared towards families. The streets include bike routes and traffic calming. The pedestrian sidewalks are well-treed and enhanced by ornate street lamps. There is plenty of greenspace and nature nearby for local residents to enjoy.
Homes:
Wismer contains detached and semi-detached houses that are modest in size and affordable by Markham standards. These homes feature nice front and backyards and at least 3 bedrooms making them well suited for families. All the homes have driveways and at least one garage.
