Milliken Mills
History:
Milliken Mills was originally referred to as Milliken’s Corners. It was a hamlet founded in 1807 by Norman Milliken, a United Empire Loyalist from New Brunswick. He settled on Lot 1 Concession V, Markham in 1807. Milliken was industrious and quickly established a successful saw mill on the banks of the Little Rouge River. Soon a community emerged around Millikens successful mill. This hamlet consisted of a church, two blacksmith shops, a wagon maker, two hotels and two general stores. The Milliken Mills name has been on Markham maps dating back to the early 1800s. Milliken Mills was granted official name status when its post office opened in 1859. Milliken Mills had a proud farming tradition that lasted right up until the 1970s and 1980s when the present day neighbourhood was developed.
