Greensborough
History:
Historically, Greensborough had been a predominantly agricultural area surrounding the heritage communities of Mount Joy and Markham Village to the south. Development of the present day neighbourhood began to take shape with in 2005. This planned community adopted a Smart Growth model championed by the City of Markham, which includes both low and medium density residential development along with commercial space and parkland all working together harmoniously in a family friendly neighbourhood.
Overview:
Greensborough is presently the further most residential neighbourhood in the northeast part of Markham. Rural Markham with farm fields for as far as the eye can see and the Rouge National Urban Park form the north and east border of this neighbourhood. Natural barriers have always helped to define this area. The Little Rouge Creek meanders through the northeast part of the neighbourhood while the commuter Go Transit Stouffville railway line cuts through the western edge of the neighbourhood. Greensborough is not yet fully developed with certain pockets still in the development phase. If you are in the market for a new or newer home this is an excellent neighbourhood to check out.
Swan Lake Village situated near 16th Avenue and 9th line is a gated “adult lifestyle” condominium community. It functions as its community even though it is situated within the borders of the Greensborough neighbourhood.
Lifestyle:
Greensborough Common located in the centre of this neighbourhood off Bur Oak Drive features a ring of commercial buildings around a park. Local businesses include: a medical centre, pharmacy, dnetal practice, wellness and physiotherapy clinics, a learning centre and child care facility.
There are plenty of new shopping plazas on Markham Road (also known as highway 48) that feature retailers, restaurants, grocers and professional and medical offices. Further south on Markham Road is the Main Street Markham shopping village. This quaint shopping area includes lots of restaurants and boutiques as well as all the essentials such as doctors and professional offices.
Homes:
Greensborough has a wide selection of housing style ranging from low-rise condominiums, and stacked townhomes to bungalows, full townhomes and detached houses. All the houses are fairly new. Greensborough has many new urbanism characteristics; including garages placed at the rear off laneways. Adding to the charm most houses have front porches and some have two-storey porticoes with balconies which add to the heritage feel of these homes. There is even a retirement community named Swan Lake Village situated at 9th Line and 16th Avenue. The further north you go into the neighbourhood the newer the houses. Some are in fact still being built. Many of the larger detached houses and newer style townhomes are situated in the north pocket, just south of Major Mackenzie Drive.
Recreation:
The Mt. Joy Community Centre located at 6140 16th Avenue, is a modern facility that features an indoor arena for hockey and skating, plus indoor and outdoor soccer fields, including a new artificial turf field. The centre also offers space for community meetings.
Chancery Park abuts the Greensborough Public School. It includes both walking paths and sports fields. Stalmaster Park which abuts the Mt. Joy public school also has wallking paths and sports fields.
