Berczy Village
History:
An Ontario Heritage Trust Plaque located east off Kennedy Road, north of 16th Avenue pays tribute to the German settlers who were brought to this area in 1794 by their leader William Berczy. These pioneers were the first residents in Markham Township. Despite sickness and famine these hardy families laid the foundations for prosperous agricultural development and the future residential development of many Markham neighbourhoods.
Overview:
Berczy Village is popular with families. It is convenient to commuter highways and the real estate is affordable. The streets are lined with heritage inspired homes which make it feel more like a community than a subdivision. There are connecting pathways and sidewalks for pedestrians to get around. Bicycle and bus routes share the roadways with motorists in a harmonious existence. Berczy Park offers residents an opportunity to explore nature or partake in a recreational activity such as soccer or tennis. Pierre Elliott Trudeau high school is a popular draw for families looking to buy homes in this neighbourhood.
Lifestyle:
Berczy Village shopping centre located at the corner of Bur Oak and Kennedy is a medium sized outdoor shopping plaza that includes Asian food restaurants, a bakery, pizza shop, hair salon, spa, a child care centre, medical and dental practices, a pharmacy and professional offices.
Homes:
Berczy Village named after Markham’s founder is true to its roots with heritage inspired homes. A cornucoppia of various housing styles can be found here including bungalows, storey and a half houses, townhomes and detached houses. Berczy Village houses include various sidings but are mostly brick with an antique look. Heritage features on these houses range from a variety of gables and dormers, various shingle accents and front front porches. Some houses have second floor porches over the entranceway that are decorated by fanciful woodwork. These homes add a wonderful charm to the entire neighbourhood.
Recreation:
Berczy Village has a large green corridor running through the centre of the neighbourhood known as Berczy Park North and Berczy Park South. This parkland includes a picnic pavilion with picnic tables, paved walkways through fields of wildflowers overlooking a pond, sports fields, basketball diamond, skateboard facility and a children’s playground.
Arts:
William Berczy after whom this neighbourhood is named was not only one of the founders of Markham but also renowned in the pages of history as one of Canada’s finest artists. His most famous portraits were of Mohawk chief Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant), and the Woolsey Family.
