Rural King
History:
King Heritage and Cultural Centre located at 2920 King Road has a vast collection of books and artifacts dealing with the history of King Township. It is well worth a visit. Rural King has a few tiny crossroads hamlets that have remained untouched by the passage of time and the encroachment of development. These historic hamlets include: Kettleby, Laskay, Lloydtown and Snowball. King Christian Church, circa 1851, once served the community of Kettleby. In 1982 it was relocated to the King Heritage and Cultural Centre. Of the aforementioned hamlets Snowball has the most curious name. Archival information at the King City library claims this unusual name makes reference to a community church built in 1850 that had snowballs packed in as mortar joints over the winter before sealing the joints properly in the spring. Churches were important focal points of King Townships early rural communities. Most of these churches were affiliated with the Quaker sect that were prominent throughout York Region in the 1800s. Most of these settlers were engaged in agricultural pursuits or in some cases operated mills on the banks of the Humber River and its tributaries.
