Pefferlaw
History:
Captain William Johnston, a retired naval officer from Scotland, was the recipient of a 1,000 land grant back in 1819. As a seaman he must have felt right at home with Lake Simcoe on his doorstep. Together with his brother Robert, the industrious Johnston brothers built a saw mill, wooden mill and grist mill on the banks of the river that flowed through their property. In 1832 Johnston opened up a general store and post office. The Pefferlaw name was chosen for the community by Robert Johnston. The name Pefferlaw appears in the The Select Writings of Robert Chambers: Popular Rhymes of Scotland (c) 1825. It makes reference to a farm that once existed in the parish of Chirnside, Scotland. Chamber’s was a popular Scottish author and his book of rhymes referencing Pefferlaw would have been published right around the time Robert Johnston arrived in Canada.
