Caledon East
History:
Caledon East was first settled in 1821 by Elisha and Elizabeth Torbox whose 200 acre land grant was due to the fact that they were a United Empire Loyalists family. Over time the Torbox family sold off many smaller parcels of land to other pioneer families and soon a hamlet would emerge that would initially take on the Torbox name. By the 1850s this community had expanded to a few hundred people and was commonly known as Paisley. When the village post office was opened, Caledon East was chosen as the official name of this community. Caledon East reached its zenith with the arrival of the Hamilton and Northwestern Railway in 1877. This led to land speculation and a plan of subdivision. The arrival of the railway led to prosperity but that was halted in 1960 when the railway ceased operations. This community would receive another boost in 1974 when it was amalgamated with neighbouring villages to form the newly minted Town of Caledon
