Toronto Gore Rural Estate
History:
Toronto Gore Township dates back to 1818-19. The first roads were constructed from old First Nations trails. The wedge shape of the Township likely resulted in the Gore name although it is possible that the township was also named in honour of Francis Gore, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1806 to 1811. Toronto Gore consisted of a collection of small farming hamlets. The only one of these hamlets to survive the residential development of the 1990s is Wildfield. The focal point of this pioneer community was St. Patrick’s church located at 11873 The Gore Road. The first St. Patrick’s church, built in 1830, was replaced by the present day church in 1895, Legend has it that Father Francis McSpiritt, a colourful character known for his faith healing, foretold that he would not live to see the completion of the new St. Patrick’s. Sadly, Father McSpiritt foretold his own destiny as the new church bells rang out for the first time on the occasion of his funeral.
In 1954 Wildfield families who worshipped together at St. Patricks formed Canada’s first housing cooperative. Buying land from the church they collectively financed and personally built their homes on Marysfield Drive. They drew straws to see who would get to live in each home. This housing cooperative was built in the shape of a rosary, a testament to the unwavering faith of the families who built this community. With he exception of Wildfield, Toronto Gore was still mostly farmland when it amalgamated with the City of Brampton in 1974. It was not until the late 1990s and early 2000s when the local farms were sold to developers that farm fields were replaced with new home subdivisions.
