Snelgrove
History:
Snelgrove was formerly part of Chinguacousy Township. It was originally called Edmonton by the first settlers in the area, some of whom hailed from Edmonton in England. In the Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of Peel, published in 1877 Edmonton was described as a “lively village” with a schoolhouse, five churches, a hotel, a town hall, a post office, two general stores, a carriage factory and a blacksmith shop.
In 1895 the post office name was changed to Snelgrove in order to avoid confusion with Edmonton in Alberta. The Snelgrove name was chosen as there were many branches of the Snell family living in the community and receiving mail at that time. The Snell’s were desendants of patriarch John Snell a native of Devonshire, England. In 1838 Snell received a crown land grant of 100 acres along Hurontario Street. Snell operated a successful piggery that was known for its prize winning Berkshire pigs.
