Wilmot
History:
The Wilmot neighbourhood is named after the Wilmot family who emigrated here from England in 1821. Descendants of the family held prominent roles in the community over the years and operated the family farm right up until the 1970s. The present day Wilmot neighbourhood was created by Milton Town planners in 2004 as part of the Sherwood Survey Secondary Plan which was Milton’s first wave of urban expansion beyond the downtown core.
Overview:
Wilmot is a newer neighbourhood located in the southwest pocket of Milton’s urban core. This neighbourhood has the distinction of being the site of the Milton District Hospital also known as Halton Healthcare Services. Other neighbourhood landmarks include Wilmot Neighbourhood Park which offers vistas of the Niagara Escarpment, Milton Sports Centre offering a myriad of recreational facilities, and Milton Community Park which is one of the largest parks in Milton.
Homes:
Wilmot has some of the largest detached homes in Milton. These homes include many architectural embellishments and feature various exteriors comprised of brick, stone and stucco. There are also many semi-detached homes and townhomes that are mostly situated around Wilmot Park.
Recreation:
Milton Community Park is a large greenspace that features a skatepark, basketball court, baseball diamond sports fields and picnic areas. This park is adjacent to the Milton Sports Centre at 605 Santa Maria Boulevard. This indoor sports complex includes 4 ice pads, a gymnasium, lap pool, play pool, fitness studio, and community meeting rooms. Sunny Mount Park is another large greenspace within this neighbourhood. This family oriented park includes an off-leash dog park, splash pad, and basketball courts.
Arts:
The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton located at 1010 Main Street East is an ultra modern facility where the arts flourish in the form of performances, a myriad of events, art exhibitions and community based programming for all ages. The Holcim Gallery situated inside the Arts Centre spotlights an eclectic mix of art exhibitions encompassing a variety of art mediums. There are new exhibitions every month throughout the year.
