Ford
History:
The Ford neighbourhood was created by the Town of Milton in 2004 as part of the Boyne Survey which also included the Bowes, Cobban and Walker neighbourhoods. The Ford family after whom this neighbourhood is named, emigrated to Milton in the 1830s. They were a large extended family of brothers and cousins who were prolific farmers and were also involved in the municipal politics of what was then Trafalgar Township.
The farm residence of Arthur Ford is featured in the Historical Atlas of Halton County published in 1877. This sketch gives the impression that pioneer life was prosperous and the family became quite wealthy. The house in the sketch is a grand Regency style home with appendages and outbuildings which were likely stables for the horses frolicking in the fields. There is a grand front porch that runs the length of the house and overlooks a bridle path entranceway that is surrounded by a beautiful and immaculate landscaped garden. Neatly arranged farming plots surround the estate.
Overview:
Ford is one of Milton’s newest neighbourhoods. It is situated south of Louis St. Laurent Avenue, North of Britannia Road between Bronte Street on the west and Regional Road 25 on the east. Many of the houses were built by Mattamy Homes with their distinctive wide lots and pretty architecture. This neighbourhood was built for families with large houses, sidewalks, greenspace, trails and bicycle lanes. Traffic calming roundabouts are also in place to encourage slower driving within the neighbourhood.
Homes:
The homes in this neighbourhood sit on wide lots and face the street with prominent windows, front facing gables, and recessed built-in garages. Many houses have front porches and nicely landscaped gardens.
Arts:
The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton located at 1010 Main Street East is an ultra modern facility where the arts flourish in the form of performances, a myriad of events, art exhibitions and community based programming for all ages. The Holcim Gallery situated inside the Arts Centre spotlights an eclectic mix of art exhibitions encompassing a variety of art mediums. There are new exhibitions every month throughout the year.
