Taunton North
History:
Taunton makes reference to Taunton Road, the main thoroughfare running east to west across Durham Region. The Taunton name is English in origin making reference to Somerset, County in England where many of Durham’s earlier families originated from. Taunton is a Keltic word meaning “roaring stream”.
Taunton Road was originally referred to as the 4th Concession. The street name was changed in the 1960s. In 1993 the Durham Region official plan added the newly formed Taunton North neighbourhood to Whitby’s urban boundary. Strict planning and environmental protection measures have been undertaken to preserve the surrounding conservation lands which are part of the Oak Ridges Moraine.
