Lynde Creek
History:
The Lynde Creek neighbourhood is named after Jabez Lynde who emigrated to this area in 1800, from Brookfield, Massachusetts, USA. The Lynde family were originally from England  and were well connected which led to a crown grant of 200 acres in Whitby. The Lynde House was situated on Dundas Street West, just a stones throw away from Lynde Creek. Lynde House was subsequently moved twice including to its present location at 910 Brock Street South. It now operates as a public museum operated by the Town of Whitby.
Lynde House is historically significant. In addition to being the oldest house in Whitby, it served a pivotal role in the War of 1812 as a stopover for militia travelling along Highway 2 between Kingston and York (now Toronto). During the war Lynde House and the family homestead served as everything from an Inn and Tavern to an infirmary and supply depot. Major General Issac Brock visited Lynde House in the months leading up to the Battle of Queenstown Heights. A heroic Brock led the British troops to victory imploring his troops to “Push on brave York volunteers” despite being mortally wounded in the battle.

This is a quiet neighbourhood with lots of families and pride of ownership among its residents which is clearly evident by the neatly manicured lawns and well maintained homes.
