      History:

      Peter Perry after whom Port Perry is named, was a key figure in the history of this community. Perry was a highly regarded reform politician. In the 1830s, and 40s, Perry’s leadership led to the successful harvesting of this areas vast forest. He was also instrumental in setting up a lucrative steam boat building industry.

      Overview:

      Scugog’s largest population centre is located in Port Perry which has approximately 6,000 residents.  Downtown Port Perry along Queen Street is one of the busiest and prettiest old fashioned main streets in the Greater Toronto Area. The picturesque Port Perry waterfront along Water Street is the heart of this community and features a pier, a marina, a community centre, walking paths and recreational parks.

      Lifestyle:

      Downtown Port Perry features wonderfully restored Victorian heritage buildings that line the streetscape fitted with old fashioned cast-iron street lamps and hanging flower baskets. There is an excellent mix of locally owned and operated stores along this route that include: clothing boutiques, home decor stores, ice-cream shops, pastry shops, coffee shops and restaurants.

      Downtown Port Perry is buzzing with special events held throughout the year including: the Mississauga First Nation PowWow, the Highland Games, and the Dragon Boat Races. StreetFest is an annual fairheld every Labour Day weekend that has been running for over 100 years. Palmer Park is the site of a popular weekly Farmers Market in the summer and fall.

       

       

      Homes:

      Port Perry follows the familiar pattern of many Ontario towns with an inner downtown core consisting of heritage homes, mostly Victorian in style dating from the mid to late 1800s followed by ranch-style bungalows and split-level houses ringing the central core that were built during the next building boom which was in the middle to later decades of the 20th century followed by newer style subdivision homes located on the periphery of town built in the 2000s right up to the present.

      Recreation:

      Lake Scugog provides a myriad of recreational activities from boating and fishing in the summer to snowmobiling and ice fishing in the winter. Downtown Port Perry along Water Street features a network of waterfront parks. Birdseye Park is a popular picnic spot and fishing hole. There is also an outdoor swimming pool at this park. Palmer Park situated in the centre of town, is a family destination with picnic areas and a children’s playground and splashpad. The adjacent Joe Fowler Memorial Park is the home of the Port Perry Tennis Club which features two hard courts. Next to the tennis club are two baseball diamonds that overlook Lake Scugog.

       

       

      Arts:

      The historic Port Perry Town Hall Theatre is recognized  as “The” Centre for the Performing Arts in Durham Region. This a popular venue for local music, dance, theatre and arts based groups who regularly perform here. The performances that take place here range from award-winning theatre, live jazz, blues and classic rock, as well as top quality tribute acts, stand-up comedy, improv, children’s theatre, community theatre, dance recitals, musicals and more.
