Brock Ridge
History:
Brock Ridge is named in tribute to Sir Issac Brock former Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. The present day neighbourhood was developed largely in the 1980s.
Overview:
Brock Ridge is located on the Pickering-Ajax border. It is wedged between the West and East branches of Duffins Creek and surrounded by a greenbelt. As its name implies the topography of the neighbourhood is quite hilly as it sits on a ridge of land off Brock Road. This is a family oriented neighbourhood with entry level homes, schools, playgrounds and a neighbourhood shopping plaza. The largest neighbourhood landmark is Brock Ridge Community Park which serves as the home field of Pickering Baseball.
Lifestyle:
Brock North Plaza is an open air plaza with independent stores and restaurants as well as medical, health and beauty and wellness businesses.
Homes:
Brock Ridge features both traditional and contemporary homes with a mix of detached houses and townhomes. Many of these homes were built in the 1990s and early 2000s. There are also new home developments currently being developed.
Recreation:
Brock Ridge Community Park located at the sound end of the neighbourhood off Brock Road, is a large park in a pretty valley setting. It has multiple baseball diamonds and soccer fields and is the home of Pickering Baseball. Centennial Park located at the north end of the neighbourhood also off Brock Road has a children’s playground as well as the Mark Dailey Memorial Ball Field.
Arts:
Durham West Arts Centre and the PineRidge Arts Council both promote art events in Pickering including the annual Durham West Studio Tour. Esplanade Park adjacent to the Pickering Municipal Complex has a summer concert series hosted by the City of Pickering. Esplanade Park is also the site of the Pickering Farmers’ Market. In addition to a variety of farm fresh food this market also includes music and arts activities for families as well as a variety of artisans showing their work. The City also hosts a summer Waterfront Concert Series at Pickering’s Millennium Square.
The City of Pickering has an official Dance Company known as SynchroniCity that performs at the annual Easter Parade, Santa Claus Parade, Tree Lighting, Artfest and other community events.
