McLaughlin
History:
The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club which began operations in the 1910s was the impetus for the first homes built in the neighbourhood. The McLaughlin neighbourhood is named after Oshawa’s preeminent McLaughlin Family. In the 1860s patriarch Robert McLaughlin founded the McLaughlin Carriage Works in the Township of Enniskillen. The company was moved to Oshawa in 1877 where it prospered and became the largest carriage works in the British Empire. In 1907 the company name was changed to the McLaughlin Motor Car Company. Many of the first automobiles in Canada were assembled here. In 1918 The McLaughlin Motor Car Company would become General Motors Canada.
Overview:
The McLaughlin neighbourhood is defined by a series of hills and dales upon which rows of houses are situated. The housing stock represents an eclectic mix of styles spanning every decade from the 1900s.Thornton Woods is a large green corridor that runs through the middle of the neighbourhood. The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club is situated in the scenic northeast pocket of the neighbourhood. This private club adds a certain cachet to the neighbourhood. McLaughlin is a popular neighbourhood with families as there are five schools situated within this neighbourhood.
Lifestyle:
There are plenty of shopping options nearby ranging from the shops and restaurants in downtown Oshawa to the nearby Oshawa Centre which is the largest mall in Durham Region and the largest in Ontario east of Toronto with over 230 retail stores.
Homes:
McLaughlin has the greatest variety of homes of any Oshawa neighbourhood. This eclectic housing mix spans popular styles from every decade in the 1900s. The oldest homes are near the Oshawa Golf Club. These include Tudor and Colonial style homes. The rest of the neighbourhood contains everything from ranch-style bungalows and split-level homes to detached suburban homes typical of the 1980s and 90s that include a prominent garage out in front of the house.
Recreation:
The Oshawa Golf and Curling Club is nestled into the eastern portion of this neighbourhood. This is one of the oldest private golf clubs in Ontario.
The Oshawa YMCA is just a few minutes away located at 99 Mary Street North.
Arts:
The Oshawa Valley Botanical Garden is a network of master planned parks and pretty gardens that follow the natural course of the Oshawa Creek from Adelaide Avenue to Gibb Street. The landscape here will inspire the artist within you.
