Westney Heights
History:
Westney Heights is named after the Westney family who owned a farm in this area in the late 1800s. William Heron Westney who was born on the family farm in 1916 served with distinction as a Pickering Councillor and later as Warden of the County of Ontario. In 1951 when a road was constructed in front of the family homestead it was named Westney Road in honour of William Westney.
The present day neighbourhood was developed in the 1980s. The Westney Heights subdivision was popular with homebuyers thanks to a progressive marketing plan that offered buyers low interest rates at a time when mortgages were as high as 18% to 20%. Westney Heights Public School opened in 1984 to serve the hundreds of new families that were moving into the neighbourhood.
