Southwood
History:
Southwood was once prime farmland. The Campbell and the McClausland Farms were two of the last farms operating in the area prior to the residential development of this neighbourhood in the 1960s.
Overview:
Southward is a small neighbourhood located in the central part of Ajax near the downtown and close to the Ajax-Pickering Hospital. There are lots of amenities nearby along Harwood Avenue. Southwood Park forms a green corridor through the neighbourhood which has very pretty streetscapes with tree-lined curvi-linear streets on a gentle slope of land. The houses encompass post modern styles that are reminiscent of the Brady Bunch era.
Lifestyle:
There are a plethora of shopping options located closeby in downtown Ajax along Harwood Avenue, which is the main commercial shopping corridor in Ajax.
Homes:
Southwood’s tree-lined streets twist and wind on a gentle topography that provides a beautiful backdrop for the charming homes in this neighbourhood. Most of the houses are detached and situated on large lots with beautiful green lawns. The house styles include split-level homes, raised bungalows and ranch-style bungalows from the 1950s and 1960s.
Recreation:
The Ajax Greenbelt Trail runs through this neighbourhood providing residents with a chance to enjoy a nature walk as well as providing an off road alternative for cyclists and joggers to enjoy.
Arts:
The former St. Francis de Sales Church, appropriately situated on Church Street, is a Gothic Victorian architectural masterpiece that has been converted by the Town of Ajax into a multi-use community arts, cultural and performance centre now known as the St. Francis Centre. This beautiful venue hosts a myriad of arts events including: live theatre, film screenings, concerts, music recitals, workshops, art shows, as well as private and public functions.
