Pickering Beach
History:
Pickering Beach was originally part of Pickering Township. In the 1920s real estate developer James Tuckett envisioned this area as a cottage and resort community for well to do Torontonians. Tucker’s vision became a reality and by the 1930s the Pickering Beach Community Association was formed. This is now a year round community with many of the original Pickering Beach cottages having been replaced by much larger custom infill homes.
Overview:
As its name implies the Pickering Beach neighbourhood is situated on the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Caruthers Creek forms a green corridor along the eastern boundary of this neighbourhood. This is an older neighbourhood with a grid street pattern. The lots are spacious and well treed. The neighbourhood has a cottage feel surrounded by greenspace and waterfront. Lakeview Boulevard overlooking Lake Ontario is the signature street in the neighbourhood. A paved and well used waterfront trail runs adjacent to this street.
Lifestyle:
The closest shopping destination to this neighbourhood is Downtown Ajax along Harwood Avenue which is only five minutes away.
Homes:
Pickering Beach housing stock dates back to the early 1900s and include an eclectic mix of housing styles that can best be described as vernacular cottage. These houses have a whimsical charm that you would expect from a quaint waterfront community. The lots are spacious with many homes enjoying commanding views of Lake Ontario. The character of the neighbourhood has been changing in recent years with a growing number of custom infill homes replacing the original cottages, as land values continue to increase in this popular Ajax neighbourhood.
Recreation:
The Waterfront Trail runs along the south end of this neighbourhood providing numerous recreational activities for residents. Paradise Park just north of the Waterfront Trail has a children’s playground, tennis courts and beautiful vistas of Lake Ontario.
Arts:
The former St. Francis de Sales Church, appropriately situated on Church Street, is a Gothic Victorian architectural masterpiece that has been converted by the Town of Ajax into a multi-use community arts, cultural and performance centre now known as the St. Francis Centre. This beautiful venue hosts a myriad of arts events including: live theatre, film screenings, concerts, music recitals, workshops, art shows and private and public functions.
