Nottingham
History:
This part of Ajax was originally part of Pickering Township. It became part of Ajax when the Durham Region municipal boundaries were formed in 1974. This was a rural community up until the early 2000s when urban sprawl swallowed up the local farms. The last relic from this bygone pioneer era is West Glen Farm located at 1733 Westney Rd North. This Regency style farmhouse with its large front porch steep pitched gable and architectural detailing helped inspire the Old Ontario Revival and Heritage theme of the new homes that now dot this former pastoral landscape.
Overview:
Nottingham is one of the largest subdivisions in Ajax. It is also one of the most attractive with a varied topography, lots of greenspace, pretty streetscapes with decorative street lamps, and beautiful newer homes with traditional architecture. The neighbourhood is divided into various enclaves identified by stone entrance markers with names like O’Shea, Millward, Montebello, Goodhart and Peacock. Each of these enclaves has their own dedicated road to enter and exit and each enclave contains an interior network of crescent shaped streets.
Lifestyle:
The Westney and Taunton Shopping Centre and the Somerset Plaza provide Nottingham residents with a variety of shopping options that service household needs.
Homes:
Nottingham has an impressive collection of executive size detached homes on wide lots with built-in garages and covered front porticos. The Old Ontario Revival and Heritage inspired architecture of these homes features traditional accents with brick exteriors, columned front porch verandas, steeply pitched gable roofs, and lush green lawns.
Recreation:
There are numerous golf courses within a ten minute drive of this neighbourhood. Also just a short drive north of here is the Greenwood Conservation Area where you can enjoy hiking, bicycling and fishing in the warmer months as well as snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the wintertime.
Arts:
The former St. Francis de Sales Church, appropriately situated on Church Street, is a Gothic Victorian architectural masterpiece that has been converted by the Town of Ajax into a multi-use community arts, cultural and performance centre now known as the St. Francis Centre. This beautiful venue hosts a myriad of arts events including: live theatre, film screenings, concerts, music recitals, workshops, art shows and private and public functions.
