      History:

      Dating back thousands of years the Duffins Creek watershed had been a favourite fishing and hunting spot for the First Nations people. When European settlers arrived here in the 1600s, they referred to Duffins Creek as “Riviere au Saumon” named for the abundance of Atlantic salmon, that annually migrated upstream to spawn in the Rouge River. Families from the British Isles and the United States operated agricultural and livestock farms in this area throughout much of the 1800 and 1900s. The Discovery Bay neighbourhood developed in the 1970s and 80s was one of the earliest planned communities in Ajax.

      Overview:

      Discovery Bay is situated in the southwest pocket of Ajax on the shores of Lake Ontario. This neighbourhood is bordered by a commercial corridor to the north, Lake Ontario to the south and Duffins Creek greenbelt and marshlands to the west. The signature landmark in the neighbourhood is Rotary Park which is situated along the waterfront and features community pavilions, picnic areas, paved trails, children’s playgrounds, nature interpretive plaques and lookout areas. There are plenty of amenities nearby in downtown Ajax which is just a few minutes away.

      Lifestyle:

      Discovery Bay Centre situated at 570 Westney Rd S, is a small neighbourhood plaza with a handful of fast food restaurants and convenience type stores.

      Homes:

      Discovery Bay housing stock consists of detached houses with brick and or frame exteriors. Typical of a 1970s subdivision these homes have a prominent single or double car garage situated at the front of the house The streetscape is pretty and pedestrian friendly with sidewalks that are lined with a mature tree canopy.

      Arts:

      The former St. Francis de Sales Church, appropriately situated on Church Street, is a Gothic Victorian architectural masterpiece that has been converted by the Town of Ajax into a multi-use community arts, cultural and performance centre now known as the St. Francis Centre. This beautiful venue hosts a myriad of arts events including: live theatre, film screenings, concerts, music recitals, workshops, and art shows.
