Audley
History:
Alexander Dunlop was the first to settle this part of Ajax back in 1835. He was soon joined by other settlers and their families from the British Isles. Originally this area was referred to as Brown’s Corners after Abraham Brown who was the proprietor of the local hotel which was a popular watering hole. Brown was a showman and a salesman and ran a raucous establishment with staged events such as horse racing and curio attractions including caged wild animals. Brown’s Corners became known as Audley in 1858. By the 1860s this village was flourishing with a post office, school, general store, wagon works, blacksmith, tannery and hotel. This was also the decade when Audley got its first church bringing civility and orderliness to the community.
Audley was one of the last planned neighbourhoods to be developed by the Town of Ajax. It was developed in the 2010s. The Audley Recreation centre which has become the focal point of this neighbourhood opened in 2013.
