Applecroft
History:
Applecroft derives its name from the last farmer in this area a settler by the name of Richard Appleton who operated a farm on the banks of Duffins Creek. Applecroft was the fourth neighbourhood planned by the Town of Ajax. It was developed in the late 1980s. Applecroft Public School opened in 1990.
Overview:
Applecroft is located in the central part of Ajax between Harwood Avenue and Westney Road. The neighbourhood terrain is hilly and slopes from east to west. Miller’s Creek forms a large green corridor through the neighbourhood. This greenspace has a paved trail that is popular among residents. The streets are traffic calmed with bicycle lanes. The McLean community centre is a neighbourhood hub for recreational activities and includes a skateboard park. The shopping amenities are excellent and include both the massive RioCan Durham Centre and the Westney Heights Plaza.
Lifestyle:
RioCan Durham Centre located at 40 Kingston Road East is the largest shopping complex in Durham. This popular shopping destination features major retailers such as Walmart, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Costco, Marshalls, Winners, HomeSense, SportChek, and Chapters.
Westsney Heights Plaza is a medium size open air shopping plaza located along Westney Road North. The main anchor tenants include: Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC, Scotiabank, and Starbucks.
Homes:
Applecroft is a new home subdivision developed in the 2000s. Some of the houses have just recently been built. The architecture features traditional designs. The houses have handsome brick exteriors and vary in size from istarter homes to larger executive style homes.
Recreation:
The McLean Community Centre located at 95 Magill Drive features a gymnasium, fitness facilities and community meeting rooms. There is a large greenspace surrounding the centre that includes a skateboard park.
The Miller’s Creek Community Park is part of a large greenbelt that runs through this neighbourhood. This park includes a soccer field, baseball diamond, playgrounds and a multi-purpose paved trail that follows the path of Miller’s Creek. This greenbelt connects with Miller’s Community Park and the McLean Community Centre situated at the south end of the neighbourhood.
Arts:
The McLean Community Centre serves as the home to the Community Art Exhibition that spotlights local artists. The Ajax McLean Library Branch also offers some arts based programs.
