Come experience The York Corpus Christi Plays as they were performed in 14th-century England!
Free & Open to All Ages (Outdoor event—bring blankets, folding chairs, sunhats, or umbrellas!)
Poculi Ludique Societas (PLS), sponsored by the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies (CRRS), presents a full-scale recreation of the York Corpus Christi Plays. This day-long event will feature 50 plays performed sequentially by 17 North American theatre groups. Each play—drawn from biblical narratives and medieval devotional texts—will be performed on replica wagon stages, recreating the mobile staging practices of medieval York (1376–1569).
Travel Back in Time: Watch plays performed on authentic replica wagon stages by costumed actors from across North America.
Perfect for All Ages*: From the Creation of the World to Noah’s Ark to The Last Judgment, these bite-sized plays, some funny, some moving, are great for kids and adults alike. (*Plays that may not be appropriate for younger children are noted on our website and programme.)
Come & Go as You Please: Plays repeat at three different spots, so wander between them, grab a snack, and enjoy at your own pace. (No need to stay past midnight—unless you want to!)
Bring the whole crew and be part of theatre history—grandparents, classmates, history buffs, and future knights & princesses, all are welcome!
Rain Plan: If storms hit Saturday, we’ll move to Sunday.
